Ethiopians in Switzerland commemorate November 1st in Bern – Nov 2006

Bern, Switzerland (4 November 2006) – Hundreds of Kinjit supporters, the largest opposition party in Ethiopia and Ethiopians at large gathered in Bern, (the capital city of Switzerland) Helvetiaplatz at 2 p.m on Wednesday, November 1st calling for the release of opposition leaders, human rights activists and journalists languishing in Kaliti and other prisons.

The large crowd marched from the ‘Helvetiaplatz’ to the USA Embassy where they were welcomed by the political officer of the embassy who assured them that their message will reach Dr. Condoleeza . Rice, the USA secretary of state.Earlier, a delegation of four Kinjit support group in Switzerland was welcomed by the Swiss federal government’s Foreign office deputy Head of political Affairs, Mr. Etienne Thevoz.
Mr Thevoz reafirmed his government’s position stating that the unjustly imprisoned CUDP leaders and supporters must be freed.After a rally of three and half hours, the participants reaffirmed their commitment and readiness to strengthen the struggle until the imprisoned CUDP leaders and supporters are free and the helm of power is handed to those elected by the people.Listen to the VOA Amharic report.
